Right,

So let me start this by saying that in any of my photography or uploaded works here on DA I have never once given any thought to the file size, resolution, or its "dpi". I usually just work in what ever image size is easy for me and upload the file with out much thought; and once in a while then editing or cropping is forgone because I just want to get something uploaded to show everyone "Yes I am still alive" I let DA do the work of reducing the image file to the smaller size by simply selecting a smaller upload for the display.

But as I currently work in a Scrap booking store I've started looking at pictures more often, and with the shops new 12x12 printer I even started playing around with digital scrap booking, when something bothered me. On a new blank file in Photoshop 7.0 everything is the size I love working with no matter if the image is a 4x6 or 12x12, but when I transfer in to that file a scan or digital image it never fills in just a small portion (like say a 4x6 into the 12x12) but rather the entire area. So I got thinking why is it a 4x6 in one file shows up so much bigger then a 4x6 blank file in Photoshop. Or really any file to any file.

Now sure we hear all the time that higher resolution pictures are better for prints (not that I print any of my work I just post it all in here for anyone who wants to drool over it for what ever reason) but until just a bit ago I never realized how much a difference the images make in Photoshop when at the different sizes. Its almost as all this time Photoshop is trying to convince people to work smaller when in the world of photography they tell you to work bigger. File wise I mean. I think the largest brush I have ever used in Photoshop is a 46 pixel brush and that was because I was in a hurry. Sure I never have printed out any of my images but if prints are better in the higher resolution and by default Photoshop sets everything in a lower resolution (you can look for your self in a new file Photoshop 7 always sets the resolution at 72 pixels/inch) then by working in a new file for something like a collage or digital scrapbook page and scaling all your images down to fit a pre designed resolution your damaging the quality of your prints?

And you know not once in any Photoshop guide book do I remember it ever mentioning adjusting the resolution or anything of the like when making a new file rather then working off an existing one. Sure print companies will tell you 100x's over use a higher resolution but what do you do when the programs you trust are working against the high resolution printers support? Or is resolution just a hype to make noobies to the field buy into the idea that their work will be better with a higher resolution camera?

For someone with no formal education on the subject and who just ran into this by accident all I can say it while the resolution standards are blurred in thanks to blank files produced by photo editing programs you have to give something to resolution when even a site like DA wont allow for large size prints because a file size and dpi standards. Maybe from now on I'm going to start looking more at the resolution and DPI for my photography and drawings... well at least my photography if I ever plan to set a few up as DA prints.

Well end of rambling.

Or rather redrawing some old things and picking up on forgotten ideas.

I'll probably keep doing the Dork Comics, if not just for the fun of it, but also because they are easy to doodle out and using makers to color them doesn't kill them like the rest of my work. But I am working right now on other things than those comics namely REAL DRAWINGS!

I did a remake to that picture "Break away" mostly because I am back to feeling the same mood as I wanted to portray in the picture. And anyone remember that picture of SnowWhite that kinda looked like a bookmark? Originally I was going to do one for each of the fairy tale characters (Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Repunzel, ect) and I've picked up on it again.. I am aiming for 6 total. If they turn out really nice I might try selling them as bookmarks.

All and all I hope posting this will help me remeber to finish those pictures this time. Though right now I just need to remember to scan the few pictures I currently have sitting around.

For lack of tact.

Ok,

Now I know I am a little eccentric and quite obviously mental to anyone who has ever met me, even be it for a few seconds, but the least a person can do is understand that I take some things very seriously.

I am just now coming off freaking out because I mis-placed three brand new books my mother just purchased for me. Now your probably thinking I'm crazy for completely wigging out over something so little as a few books, but I happen to love books very much and even the slightest damage to them sends me into a frenzy. Both my parents know this. I border obsessive complosive over the care of my books.

It wasn't that I was merely worried over the location of my new books but the fact that at that precise moment my bother happened to be taking a shower. Showers mean water and condensation a quite horridly damage to any poor paper laid product that might be in the area of them. Now you can only guess where I thought my books where. Oh sure three where bound in plastic and safe from the water but one, one was not. And if not for lack of tact my parents could have been a little more assisting or at least willing to the fact that my books, my brand new JUST PURCHASED books where quite possibly sitting in that stuffy sweat filled bathroom with my brother obtaining WATER DAMAGE!

Oh right and like I'm just going to waltz in there and snatch them out while my brother is naked in the shower. If I was certain with out a shadow of a doubt they where in there, then yes I would risk a few brain cells to be scared by the image of my BROTHER naked to save my books from damage. But as I was not certain no I was not about to do that and, being a man himself, my father could have been a little more willing to do the check for me rather than sitting there telling me to wait HALF A FRIGGEN HOUR for my brother to get out of the shower.

Do you have any idea how much damage a book can obtain from the steam of a hot shower in half an hour?! Quite a bit actually. Fortunately my books where safely sitting somewhere far away from the bathroom in no harm at all.

But it is still for the lack of tact my parents hold that I am even ranting about this, though the numbers of you reading this is probably very fleeting.
